BIRTHDAY WEEKEND

This past weekend marked my 32nd birthday! It seemed pretty insignificant given everything that’s been going on in the world, but was a nice excuse to take a step back and disconnect.

I’ve been spending an insane amount of time on social media lately. As a lot of my job involves me being on my phone – whether it’s keeping up with posting content, answering questions and comments, etc. it’s hard to just…not pick up my phone. I’ll note here, for those that may not know what I do, I work in marketing for a large (local) ice cream company and until recently have managed social media accounts for other local businesses as well. Although my birthday celebrations were pretty relaxed, my main goal was to put-the-phone-down.

To celebrate my birthday, Cody and I made breakfast for dinner and had an 80’s movie marathon…to say I love the 80’s would be the understatement of the century. I live for it. Our evening was otherwise unplugged. That was a whole 6 hours phone free. It was amazing.

The next day, we drove out to Drumheller with Trudy (our pup) to get out of the city for a day. If you’ve never heard of Drumheller, go google it now. It’s a pretty crazy little town and known as the dinosaur capital of the world due to the high concentration of fossils found there. It’s unique landscape is perfect for exploring and taking in the views (think valleys and crazy rock formations).

To cap off my birthday weekend, Emily and I went on a mini road-trip on Sunday afternoon (to call it a road-trip is definitely a stretch, but let’s go with it). We drove out of the city to the farmlands and took a series of different photos, just for fun. Although I love working with likeminded clients (we often do branded shoots together), I also love taking photos when there is no agenda involved.

By my own request, I asked Emily to shoot only film…we would typically take back-up photos on digital, just incase the film didn’t work out, but to be honest, I always prefer film and those are the photos that I share the most of anyway. We got these developed at good ol’ London Drugs (some locations still offer 1-hour photo) and I must say, aside from some minor colouring issues, we were very pleased.

I can’t tell you how good those few days were…to unplug, enjoy my favourite things and create unattached to any deadline. Beyond that, I am very happy to be posting on my blog again! I know people don’t read blogs too much these days and I am well aware I probably wont get any comments, but sometimes we have to do things just for ourselves. That is exactly what I intend to do with this space!
